If you are affected by a train strike in Italy, ItaliaRail is here to help!

Strikes are an unfortunate part of Italy’s railway system, however Italians schedule strikes in advance, so travellers can plan ahead.

If Your Train is Canceled

Fortunately, there are a number of alternative travel options in the event of your train being canceled:

Alternative travel options

  • Rebook train travel - as mentioned above, there are a number of ‘guaranteed’ trains that run during Trenitalia strike action: click here for the list. You will need to purchase a new ticket, either at the station or right here at italiarail.com. Your canceled train will be refunded in full (see below).
  • Italo trains - Italo is an alternative high-speed train company in Italy, which may not be affected by the Trenitalia strike. Check availability here.
  • Buses - Italy has a well-developed bus network that connects major cities and towns. Companies like FlixBus, Itabus, and MarinoBus offer comfortable and affordable journeys.
  • Car Rentals - Visit the ItaliaDrive website for great deals on car rentals.
  • Domestic Flights - If you need to cover long distances quickly, domestic flights are a good option. Airlines like ITA and Ryanair offer connections between major Italian cities.
  • Ride-Sharing - Services like BlaBlaCar connect drivers with empty seats to passengers heading in the same direction. It's an affordable and often social way to travel.
  • Hotels - In some instances, it may make sense to spend the night at a hotel and continue your journey the next day. If so, visit the ItaliaHotels website for great deals on hotel stays.

Please note, confirmation of cancellation may not be provided until 15 minutes before departure. If you make alternative travel arrangements and your train is not canceled, you will not be able to apply for a refund.
