Those who are familiar with European train travel may be familiar with the Eurostar train that goes underneath the English Channel, connecting London with Paris and Brussels. Make sure not to confuse that Eurostar train with Eurostar Italia, often abbreviated as ES Italia.
Before the Alta Velocità (AV) trains, ES Italia were the fastest trains in Italy. They still exist, and because AV trains are newer, Eurostar trains actually still serve more cities than the AV network does.
Eurostar Italia trains are faster than regional trains,though not as fast as AV trains, and they are more comfortable than Italy's slower trains. ES Italia trains are almost always air-conditioned, in both first and second class cars, and these require reservations just like AV trains do.
The Eurostar Italia name is sometimes interchangeable with the Frecciabianca AV trains, the slowest of the AV network), and you may see AV signs that read “Eurostar Italia AV.” Both ES and AV trains are operated by Trenitalia, so you just need to think about the ticket prices and schedule that suits your travel needs.
